Oklahoma Healthy Aging Initiative Shares How Older Oklahomans Can Maintain Healthy Lifestyle On The Porch

Aging makes staying active a difficult task, and for thousands of older Oklahomans, getting physical activity can be more difficult than it was before.

Nile Berge, a representative from the Oklahoma Healthy Aging Initiative, joined News 9 on the Arca Continental Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages Porch to share how older Oklahomans can stay active, using simple exercises in their own homes.

The Oklahoma Healthy Aging Initiative stresses the importance of older Oklahomans maintaining their physical health by participating in simple and easy exercises.

“[They are] very basic seated exercises that anyone can do it anytime, even if you’re not able to get out of the house. If it’s cold outside, if things are happening, you can still do some exercises from the comfort of your own home,” Berge said.

Simple exercises like shoulder rolling and ankle circles are great ways to incorporate physical activity into your everyday routine.

“For older adults, it’s recommended 30 minutes a day as a minimum, and you can break that up. You can go 15 minutes in the morning and15 minutes at night,” Berge said.
