Nuri Şahin replaces Terzić as Borussia Dortmund manager
Nuri Şahin has been confirmed as the new Borussia Dortmund head coach, the Bundesliga club announced in a statement on Friday.
The 35-year-old has signed a three-year contract at Signal Iduna Park and replaces Edin Terzić, who announced his resignation on Thursday.
Şahin made 274 appearances for Dortmund as a player across two spells and was a part of the side that won the league title in 2011. The Turkey international, who made his debut for Dortmund as a 16-year-old, also played for Real Madrid, Liverpool and Werder Bremen before eventually retiring at Turkish side Antalyaspor in 2021.
“It is a great honour for me to be head coach of Borussia Dortmund. I would like to thank everyone in the club’s senior management team for the faith they have shown in me, and I am hugely looking forward to my new role at BVB,” Şahin said in a statement.
“From day one we will do everything we can and work with energy and passion to make this club as successful as possible.”
He returned to Dortmund in the capacity of an assistant coach in January 2024, following a year-and-a-half spell as manager of Antalyaspor.
Şahin impressed as an assistant coach under Terzić and was credited with playing a key role in Dortmund’s run to the Champions League final.
“Nuri Sahin helped us reach the final of the UEFA Champions League last season. He has the experience here as a player and assistant coach to know how BVB works — and above all he knows how to be successful,” Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl said.
“With his natural authority and expertise he has a good relationship with our team, and he knows what we need to work on collectively. Nuri has our full confidence and our full support.”
