LFD HazMat team called to chemical spill at food processing plant in Butchertown

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – No one was hurt after a chemical spill happened at a food processing plant in Butchertown.
Louisville Fire Department crews were called on Thursday just before 8:30 p.m. to JBS at 1200 Story Avenue.
LFD firefighters and HazMat companies arrived within two minutes and spoke to the facility manager. A sodium bisulfite 40% leak was reported inside the facility.
Hazardous Materials teams began air monitoring and establishing control zones and entry teams suited up in protective equipment, according to a release. A HazMat entry team entered the facility at 10:15 p.m. and stopped the leak within 12 minutes. They underwent decontamination afterwards.
The Louisville Fire Department said the solution was found to be leaking from a malfunctioning coupling on a pipe. The plant’s preliminary computer monitoring system calculated 107 gallons had been released and the leak was contained inside the building.
Operations were turned back to plant managers at 11:47 p.m.
MSD, Health Department, Louisville Water Company, LMEMS, and LMPD were also called to help at this incident.
