KSNT 27 News collects food for local nonprofit

TOPEKA (KSNT) — KSNT 27 News collected food for a local nonprofit at two grocery stores this Friday to celebrate our parent company’s birthday.

In honor of Nexstar’s 28th birthday, 27 News partnered with Harvesters Community Food Network to collect food and assemble meal kits at two Dillons locations in Topeka for families in need.

“It is amazing, the advocacy that we have with KSNT and with Dillons,” Travis Bourbon, who works for Harvesters, said. “And, the impact is experienced all throughout the Topeka area.”

The 27 News team accepted donations outside the Dillons in North Topeka and at the intersection of Southwest 21st Street and Southwest Fairlawn Avenue.

We asked for donations of white canned chicken, BBQ sauce in plastic bottles, boxes of instant brown rice and cans of black beans, canned corn and pears. Working for you, we boxed these ingredients into meal kits that Harvesters will share with families in need.

“One of the things we like to do is provide full meals to families,” Amy Pinger, the community engagement manager for Harvesters, said. “So, this provides not only a recipe but all the ingredients to make barbeque chicken burrito bowls.”

KSNT 27 News partnered with Dillons and Harvesters for a city-wide food drive last year. This year, we collected more ingredients than last year.

In 2016, Nexstar’s Founder, Chairman and CEO, Perry Sook, established the company’s “Founder’s Day of Caring.” During the third week of June, employees in each of Nexstar’s 116 markets volunteer with non-profit organizations and public service agencies in local communities every year.
