Just Like the Flies… I Actually Really Enjoyed the Food at Disney Lookout Cay!
The copious amount of flies around the food at Lookout Cay definitely stole the show when reviewing lunch! The positive news for future cruisers is the menu is awesome and I loved what I did get to try.
Similar to Castaway Cay, there are three locations to grab lunch! True-True BBQ, True-True Too BBQ, and Serenity Bay BBQ in the adult-exclusive area. The amenities on Lookout Cay are all closer to each other, making it easier to visit each dining location if you want to. Although, spoiler alert, the menus are the same!
You can find similar sides near both the Beach BBQ Burgers and the Flavorful Fish sections of the buffet. Some of these items include potato salad, fresh fruit, coleslaw, grilled pineapple and black bean salad, and tomato-shallot salad.
Heading over to the Flavorful Fish section, you can grab fresh grilled Bahamian-style lime and ginger marinated snapper and grilled salmon with pineapple salsa. I found both fish pretty similar to what is served at Castaway Cay. However, the sides were very different. They included pickled vegetables, yucca fries, grilled corn, and broccoli. The assortment of fresh sides was a welcomed change!
To me, the highlight is the unique items at Lookout Cay, like the fried plantains, fried okra, Bahamian pigeon peas and rice with either seafood or chicken. I thought all of these were tasty and a nice addition to the “regular” BBQ items or what you can get onboard the ship.
The rice dishes were similar to paella but were missing a little bit of that same spice.
As always, there are plenty of options for everyone, like grilled hotdogs served with chili or sauerkraut, cheeseburgers, fried spicy chicken sandwiches on a brioche bun, and of course, French fries. As you can see, these items were pretty picked over later in the afternoon.
There is also a section for BBQ Ribs and Rotisserie Chicken. I did get to try the ribs and they were both flavorful and tender. I so wanted to try the rotisserie chicken but it was one of the dishes overrun by flies. My loss, their gain I guess!
At each BBQ location, there is a vegetarian section with plant-based island curry, Bahamian pigeon peas and rice, fried okra, French fries, and grilled corn.
The Serenity Bay BBQ area was much smaller, including both the buffet area and seating. To me, it lost some of the charm that Serenity Bay has at Castaway Cay.
Overall, the atmosphere feels much more like a theme park but I did find it easier to navigate in many ways. Also, the covered seating areas were both large and well-shaded. It also gave you a moment to appreciate the artwork of the canopies above, inspired by the nature of the Island of Eleuthera. There are 10 similar seating arounds throughout the island.
We were part of the preview cruise on the Disney Magic and so it was the first time any crew members had been to the island and prepared lunch. All that being said, I think the kinks we did experience were the result of the cruise being a preview.
Don’t let that stop you from enjoying this new Disney destination. The menu was delightful and the view could not be any more gorgeous!
