FOX 5/KUSI celebrates Nexstar’s Founder’s Day of Caring with the San Diego Food Bank

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — In honor of Nexstar’s Founder’s Day of Caring, FOX 5 and KUSI employees spent Friday afternoon bagging meals for families in need at the San Diego Food Bank‘s Miramar Warehouse.

Together, volunteers assembled 827 meal bags, far surpassing the team’s goal of 700. That amounts to about 12,818 pounds of food — or 8,546 meals — for San Diego families experiencing food insecurity.

Each of the bags, which go to San Diego Food Bank’s Emergency Food Assistance Program, contained shelf-stable items like rice, lentils, canned corn and more.

As San Diego Food Bank CEO Casey Castillo explained, every bag put together by volunteers makes a world of difference in helping San Diegans put food on the table at a time when many are struggling to make ends meet.

“This year alone, we are going to distribute nearly 50 million pounds throughout San Diego County — that’s nearly 50 million meals,” Castillo said. “That’s the second most we’ve done in the 50-year history of the San Diego Food Bank. So the need is still there, the pressure is still there.”

San Diego Food Bank is always looking for new volunteers to help out at its warehouses in Miramar and Vista. San Diegans can visit the nonprofit’s website for more information on how to get involved.
