EMCC hosting fill the van food drive

Maine (WABI) – Eastern Maine Community College is hosting a fill the van food drive Tuesday June 18th.

Organizers will be at the Orono IGA from 9 a.m.-3p.m. collecting donations to support students facing food insecurity.

EMCC provides students food through the pantry and four satellite food pantries around campus.

They’ll also deliver within 10 miles of campus.

They’re asking for donations of shelf stable and fresh foods, hygiene items, baby supplies, and pet food.

”Often those that stand to gain the most from a college education are those that face the most barriers,” said Cathy Ryder EMCC AmeriCorps VISTA.

“It’s as simple as one can, help fill the belly of a student who’s about to take a test or study for that test. It’s very hard to get an A in anything if you’re facing hunger, or, you know, your child is not going to have a meal when you go home at night,” Ryder adds.

They will also be accepting cash and checks.

Online donations can be made here.
