Being more thoughtful with dad on Father’s Day | Lifestyle

If you talk to local business owners or managers, they’ll tell you that lunch or dinner reservations, and general shopping for dads for Father’s Day doesn’t usually match the level of spending that moms get on Mother’s Day.

It’s simply a difference they need to consider when making business projections or other related decisions.

In the last couple of weeks, a topic of conversation that came up with two female friends, on separate occasions, was what their plans were for Father’s Day.

They both basically told me the same thing – their men commented about when it’s Mother’s Day, they “go all out” with celebrations, but when it’s Father’s Day, they don’t get the same level of effort.

In your personal experience, do you spend more time thinking about how to make mom feel more special on her day, as opposed to making dad feel more cared for on his day? If yes, and you want to level up, this article might help.

Incidentally, I wrote the article “Gift ideas for mom that shouldn’t cost much” in the May 10 Pacific Daily News. Those ideas illustrate that you don’t need a lot of money to make mom feel special, but they will require some level of commitment and creativity on your part.

The dad in your life can certainly appreciate those ideas, so I’m sharing some of them again, but with specific tips for him. I’ve also added a few more options to explore:

1. Gifts on a budget

If you’re looking for gifts under $25 for example, you can opt for grooming kits and gadgets. I see these at Ross all the time and at Macy’s especially this time of year. And then of course, there’s an array of items at Don Don Donki that dad has likely never seen.

Please don’t forget our local businesses – whether it’s unique apparel, merchandise, food items, or customizable pieces, these businesses would appreciate your support. Many of them don’t have brick and mortar shops, but they have Instagram pages you can use to browse their products and connect with them.

Think about a gift dad needs and will appreciate.

2. Support dad’s hobbies

Is the special man in your life a grill-loving dad? Is he outdoorsy? Does he enjoy hitting the gym? What sports does he play? Is he into photography? Painting? Does he like to fish? Golf? Or maybe he collects specific items?

You know your dad more than anyone else. Make the effort to hone in on ways to specifically support one or more of his special interests.

How? Add to his collection. Replenish his supplies or frame his work. Make time to join him in one of his activities, or simply allow him to carve out the time for him to enjoy these activities without guilt with or without any company.

By showing you support his hobbies, you’re sending the message that you understand and care about his individuality and interests.

3. Outdoor theater

Is there a new release that dad missed watching in the theaters? Stream it at home. If you have a projector and wall space or somewhere you can hang a cloth to, he might appreciate watching the movie in the backyard. If you don’t have a projector, the living room or his bedroom are still great options. And of course, get his favorite snacks and beverages ready. All the effort and attention to detail will give dad the sense that you’re very intentional about making him feel cared for.

4. Massage to relieve tension

A relaxing massage for dad’s back, hands or feet might be something he’ll appreciate. If you’re not sure how to give him a massage, you can turn to YouTube for easy tutorials. This can help relieve any tension he’s been holding on to from stress at the office or out in the field. Maybe soak his feet in warm water with medicinal herbs for some relaxation too?

If he’s the type of person who would really appreciate a professional massage, there are some massage businesses that offer discounted prices based on the health insurance you subscribe to. Call around to get the details.

5. Promise vouchers

Dad deserves a day off from chores, too. Can you volunteer to take on the tasks that you see him do on a daily basis? Make the commitment by writing promise cards that allow him to cash in those requests asap or later.

Ensure that these tasks are truly what your dad will appreciate and that you can commit to actually doing.

Is it taking out the trash, cutting the grass, washing the cars, or cleaning the garage?

6. Cook a meal

Many dads prefer to stay at home and grill their favorite meats as opposed to going to a restaurant to celebrate. Cooking at home usually costs lesser than eating out but it requires some labor.

How about you volunteer to lend a hand or agree to buy the necessary ingredients for the meal? And then, you do all the related clean up afterwards?

And if dad prefers to cook his meal at the beach instead of the backyard, support his decision and do what you can to make it happen. This could be a great time to catch up and engage in meaningful conversation with him.

7. Write a poem for pops

Your dad might appreciate some humor on his special day. Tread cautiously though. You’d know best what his tolerance level is for this type of poking fun.

Here are a couple of examples I came up with for this article:

Our lawn is brown, when it should be green,

Don’t worry dad, we’ll help you make it pristine…

Or

Golf balls are round, dad’s bald head is too

Don’t worry Dad, we still love you!

8. Notes for Dads

Fathers aren’t always the most expressive people. Sometimes, you need to take the first step to make dad know how much you feel about him. You’ll have to navigate the dynamics of your relationship as best as you know how to.

If you think giving a note or card is a meaningful move, then do it. Pour out your heart to remind dad how much he means to you.

The point is, put your thoughts in writing. It doesn’t have to be something long, but it should be sincere and authentic. He may keep the note as a reminder of your love when he feels down.

When Father’s Day rolls around this Sunday, you’ll be a bit more prepared to make dad feel your thoughtfulness.

Be practical. Be creative. Be fun.

Most of all, make this a Father’s Day he won’t forget!
