MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WBRC) – High school football championship games will not longer be played inside the state’s biggest college football stadiums, the AHSAA announced Wednesday.
The University of Alabama’s Bryant-Denny Stadium and Auburn’s Jordan-Hare Stadium will no longer be a part of the rotation to host the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Super 7 games.
The AHSAA said the change became necessary due to the expanded College Football Playoff in which one or both schools would be required to host playoff games which would conflict with the AHSAA Super 7 games.
AHSAA Executive Director Alvin Briggs said the conflicts would be unavoidable with the new CFP plan, adding what it’s meant to be able to play high school championship games at the two stadiums.
“We are grateful to the cities of Tuscaloosa, Auburn and Opelika, Auburn University, the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa Tourism and Sports and Auburn-Opelika Tourism for joining together to host our Super 7 since the rotation began in 2009,” said Briggs. “The experiences and memories provided for our member schools, the teams, their students, and communities have been immeasurable.”
Birmingham’s Protective Stadium will remain a part of the rotation while the AHSAA studies other rotation options.
The College Football Playoff expands to 12 teams beginning with the 2024-25 season. The first round will be played on college campuses on December 20 and 21.
